When World War II began, the United States was faced with enemies on two widespread fronts-in the Pacific, and in Europe. Our country was grossly unprepared, and it would take two years before it was able to defend itself adequately, much less to take the war to the enemy.
Young men from all across America answered the call to duty, and thousands were lured by the promise of adventure that could be found in the air. Some put their college educations on hold, while others left the farm, their jobs, and families to pursue their goals serving as air crewmen.
Some flew as pilots and co-pilots, while others assumed the roles of Navigators, Bombardiers, Radio Operators, and Aerial Gunners. Some would blaze heroic trails in the sky; some would fall under the fire of the enemy's guns and serve the remainder of their war as Prisoners of War; others would sacrifice their lives in the skies; yet all would contribute their own individual experiences to ultimate victory.
Crew 19 represents a small sample of some of these tales. |
